When three become one

When three become one: the story of Montreal’s X3 Productions
In 2010, three Montreal companies – L’Équipe Spectra, gsmprjct and BleuBlancRouge – came together to form X3 Productions, with the aim of redefining the museum experience around the world.

This new organisation collected together expertise across a range of fields, with gsmprjct’s over 50 years of experience in exhibition design and production, L’Équipe Spectra’s status as Canada’s leading cultural organisation, and BleuBlancRouge’s background developing national and international communications campaigns.

However the formation of the three came about through a mixture of hard work and good luck, after gsmprjct was invited by Lucasfilm to propose an exhibition project for Indiana Jones. Gsmprjct contacted L’Équipe Spectra to be involved, who in turn got in touch with BleuBlancRouge, and their combined final proposal so impressed Lucasfilm that they were asked to deliver a concept for Star Wars as well. And so, the collective group became X3.

The aim was that the union of these three companies would allow the newly-formed X3 Productions to work together to deliver exhibition experiences from start to finish

The aim was that the union of these three companies would allow the newly-formed X3 Productions to work together to deliver exhibition experiences from start to finish, covering everything from initial discussions through to the communications plan, and even crafting complementary online experiences.

“X3 Productions is about creating museum quality touring exhibitions that are innovative, educational and unique,” explains President of X3 Productions Jacques-André Dupont. “Creating blockbuster events using technology with an emphasis on interactivity that will change the museum experience most people have come to expect. Our goal is to make the visitor part of the exhibition, have them be the centre of the experience. Give them an active role – as opposed to a passive role – in the visit experience.

X3 Productions is about creating museum quality touring exhibitions that are innovative, educational and unique

Since its formation, X3 has toured shows that explore two of the most well-loved classics from the world of film, with its Indiana Jones and the Adventure of Archaeology: The Exhibition, and Star Wars Identities. Both exhibitions engage the audience with the films and the science around them, giving visitors the chance to find out more about both the fiction and the facts. In Indiana Jones and the Adventure of Archaeology, visitors can expect to find not just a deeper connection with the much-loved character himself, but also discover the real life world of archaeology that inspired the film’s events. Star Wars Identities also lets visitors explore their favourite Star Wars characters, while simultaneously encouraging them to discover more about their own identity.

This focus on creating an exhibition that will appeal to visitors on both an emotional and educational level is a philosophy that’s at the core of X3’s work. As Jacques-André Dupont says, “We make it a point to make their experience a personal one, one that they will bring home and can relate to on a personal level.”
